Chinese Bed Warmer

BUY AT: Gaiam

chinesebedwarmer.jpgYears ago when I lived in England, I was in a constant state of cold for the home I lived in was terribly old (over 400 years) and drafty (3 wings with a bazillion windows, no insulation and stone floors). Despite having a fireplace in the room, I would still freeze and, jumping into bed, I would freeze some more until I got into the habit of using a bed warmer.

I thought bed warmers were for people who wore those ugly long nightcap things and spoke old english or the like. But, considering I was living under the same kind of roof as them (not much changes in an old home) then perhaps there was something to these bed warmers. And, after heating one up once and running it through my sheets, I was hooked.

Even though I don’t live in a drafty old home and I have a working indoor heating system, I think a bed warmer is still useful. I like to sleep with the air a bit chilly but this doesn’t help make a bed warm. If I warm up their air, then I have a warm bed but follow with a terrible sleep. Plus, not so economic to keep heat running.

Luckily, Gaiam sells a Chinese Bed Warmer which is not only funcional, but looks beautiful. Just add a little hot water, run it over your sheets and voila, warm bed without running high electric or gas bills for heating.

There’s something charming about tradition and something wonderful about simple function - and this covers both. But if it’s not enough, I’m sure you can find one of those ugly old nightgowns and caps, speak with a funny accent and pretend your sleeping in times of yore.

Working on things

I’m a tinkering away to fix all the links and bring you more lovely bits. Hopefully you’ll see much improvement over the next few days. Hopefully, I’ll see some sleep.

Vornado Classic Air Circulator

BUY AT: Amazon

vornado.jpgIs it getting hot in here? Yes. I love summer but not what it does to my flat. Stuffy, hot, undesirable air fills my tiny space, making it hard to work during the day or sleep at night. Windows open don’t work. What does? The Vornado!

Say it with an accent and it sounds like some sexy Italian who dashes in to save you and in a way, it does. Not just a fan, it’s a circulator, making the air really move without making a lot of noise. Perfect in hot or cold weather, this gets the air moving, creating breezes and pushing hot air out. If you get the stand version, you can adjust the height but they do make a less expensive table top version.

It retails for around $99 but it’s money well spent - it’s even made my flat a little chilly! The quality, the design, the durability and it’s air pushign ability make it a must for summer.

Thank you, Vornado, for saving this summer-time lass.

Blender Bottle

BUY AT: Blender Bottle

blenderbottle.jpgMy flat is tiny, my kitchen even smaller so I can’t have blender and gadgets all over my very limited counter space. Besides, in the morning, I’m not the brightest bulb and shouldn’t be operating electrics, anyway.

Which is why I’m so happy to have discovered the Blender Bottle! Perfect for morning shakes, eggs or pancake mixes or anything else you can think of, this little bottle is the perfect kitchen gadget. The ball inside acts like a metal whisk so when shaking the bottle it really mixes all the ingredients so perfectly together. And the lid with its easy to drink from spout makes shake making all that easier - just one cup!

Dishwasher safe, fits in most car cup carriers and with a 28oz capacity (even marked on the bottle so you can make those 8oz drinks with ease), this is one of my new favourite tools. I might even have to buy a couple more.

Butterfly Study Mugs

BUY AT: Anthropologie

butterflymugs.jpg These are my everyday-isn’t life grand-time for tea mugs. They’re what I use for simple occasions, morning drinks, afternoon tea, hot chocolate and sometimes ice-cream. The size is generous, they’re easy to hold (which is perfect for warming up cold hands) and they’re incredibly pretty. Each one has a unique pattern.

If you choose to give this as a gift, think about buying a beautiful tea tin from Harney and Sons (which you can also get from Anthropologie) or a little package of marshmellows and hotchocolate to go along with it. It’s a great, inexpensive gift that anyone would love. Well, a thirsty anyone at least.

Latte Bowls

BUY AT: Anthropologie

lattebowl.jpg Savouring a latte on a cold day becomes an experience when you do so with one of these true latte bowls. In various pretty colours to mix and match, they’re easy to hold, beautiful to look at and practical for both coffee, soups and cerals. Also excellent as a hostess gift.

If you want something cute, try the mini ones which I’ve only seen in the stores. Great if you’re trying to cut down on coffee or serving to munchkins.

Cucina Hand Care Duo in Ginger

Anthropologie

cucina.jpgIt’s passe to bring wine and flowers as a hostess gift (learned after hearing “I’m a recovering alcoholic one too many times or “i have allergies”) so instead, bring something useful, beautiful and unique - and this wonderful hand washing and cream seems to be perfect.

Using a moisturising infusion of olive oil, both the cleansing liquid and cream leave the hands both clean and moisturised. And I should add well scented. My favourite? The ginger because it’s just the right amount of scent without being overpowering. And it works well in both the kitchen and washroom.

So next time you need a little gift, think of this - even if it’s for yourself.

Brasserie All-White Dinnerware Pieces

BUY AT: William Sonoma

brasserie.jpgWhen I moved into my new flat I had no plates as I donated all my crap Ikea ones when I moved last winter. I decided this time I’d buy good plates that were white to show off the new food I’d make and also so that I could mix and match plates more.

This line from Williams Sonoma is beautiful, reminding me of french cafe’s. Microwavable and dishwasher safe, these plates are meant to last. And with their open stock, you can always add more peices (but if they get rid of the line, you can return your entire set for a new line).

Although white plates might sound boring, they really are elegant and beautiful, making a plain meal look fabulous. Now I just have to learn to cook…!

Capri Blue Jar Candle #6 Volcano

BUY AT: Anthropologie

capriblue.jpgThis candle is my all-time favourite (very seldom do I repurchase the same candle). It’s a sexy, soothing, subtle scent that both men and women seem to love.

The large, glass candle is both attractive and useful; helping to keep the scent going longer and really filling up your home. Light it and your home will glow and smell good. Plus, it’s just beautiful and makes a really wonderful gift!

House Inc">Puff Comforter by House Inc

I’m a sucker for good linens - it’s just important for me and for my guests. The only problem was, I was having a guest come over and had no linens for her to sleep in. Step in House Inc Puff Comforters.

Coming in an array of patterns, these double sided comforters are made with beautiful poplin material and lots of down - literally feeling like a big, cosy puff on you. It’s perfect for cosing up on the couch or on a guest bed. Light enough for summer, warm enough for winter. I keep mine out year round on the couch to use for TV nights, it’s just that pretty. But when guests roll into town, voila, instant bed and breakfast.
